The Document Writer
Draft manuscripts in Sciwand with in-text citations from your library, thousands of citation styles, AI writing help, and export to Word/PDF.
The Writer is a full document editor for drafting manuscripts, notes, and reviews, with citations from your library built in.
Getting started
Open the Writing tab to create or open a document. Your work auto-saves as you type; the footer shows the save status and a running word and character count. Sciwand also keeps periodic version snapshots, and you can create named versions and restore any of them.
Formatting
The toolbar covers the essentials: headings (H1-H4), bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, highlight, bullet / ordered / task lists, blockquotes, tables (with a visual size picker and full row and column editing), images, and horizontal rules, plus undo and redo. You can also type / for a slash-command menu, or select text to get a quick formatting menu.
Citations and bibliography
- Type @ (or use Cite) to insert an in-text citation from your library. Citations appear as pills and can be grouped.
- A References bibliography is generated automatically from your in-text citations and updates live.
- Choose from thousands of citation styles (APA, MLA, Chicago, IEEE, Vancouver, Nature, and many more) using the citation-style button. Search the full list and switch at any time - the whole document reformats.
AI writing help
- Select text and choose Ask AI, or use the AI control on a block, to get an inline suggestion you can Accept, Undo, Retry, or refine with a follow-up.
- Use Add to Chat to bring selected text into the AI assistant, which can answer questions about your document and propose edits.
- The assistant uses your configured chat models.
Exporting
Export your document as Word (.docx), PDF, HTML, or Markdown. Exports include the formatted bibliography in your chosen citation style.
